It’s Never Too Late to Start Something New
For a long time, I thought I’d missed my chance. About eight or nine years ago, I started building a website called Family Grab Bag…
I was excited.
Until I wasn’t.
I was still teaching, and late July is one of the busiest times of the year. Between preparing for another school year and trying to learn how to build a website, every obstacle felt huge.
So, I quit.
For years, that unfinished website became one of those things I’d occasionally think about. That was a nice idea, I’d tell myself. Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be.
But here’s what I’ve realized at 54.
Sometimes we don’t quit because the dream wasn’t right.
We quit because the timing wasn’t.
Life changes. Technology changes. We change.
The things that once felt impossible can suddenly become manageable because we’ve gained experience, perspective, or simply better tools.
I’m also less worried about whether everything is perfect.
That’s one of the gifts of getting older.
So here I am, in my mid-50s, giving it another shot with Hold On! Here’s the Thing.
Two people gave me the confidence to try again.
My friend Heidi encouraged me from the beginning and even decided to jump in alongside me. Somehow, taking a leap feels less scary when someone is taking it with you.
Then there’s my daughter, who is starting her senior year as a marketing major. She brings knowledge and technical skills Heidi and I simply don’t have. Having her in our corner made this dream feel possible again.
This time, I’m writing about the life I’m living now: travel, home projects, comfortable style, gardening, friendships, adult kids, and the lessons that seem to come faster with age.
And you know what?
It feels right.
If there’s something you’ve been thinking about trying: a blog, a business, painting, pickleball (this might be next for me), learning photography, taking a class, or finally writing that book, I hope you’ll consider this your sign.
You’re not starting over.
You’re starting with everything you’ve learned.
The version of you at 54, 58, or 62 has something your younger self didn’t: experience, resilience, and a much better understanding of what really matters.
Maybe the first attempt wasn’t a failure.
Maybe it was simply practice for the season you’re in now.
Hold on… here’s the thing…
You’re not too late. You’re right on time.
And you know what, it feels right.
I have no idea where this journey will lead, but I already know I’m glad I finally started.
