My Favorite Wardrobe Staples for Women Over 50

As someone over 50, I have a few wardrobe staples I simply can’t live without.

My wardrobe has definitely changed over the years, but one thing has stayed the same: I want clothes that feel good, look put together, and fit the life I actually live. These are the pieces I reach for over and over again.

The biggest priority for me? Comfort.

After major foot surgery a couple of years ago, I have to think differently about what I wear. Most days, my outfits need to work with my Brooks or Hokas. I probably own close to 10 pairs, and I wear them about 95% of the time because they’re what keep my foot comfortable. Thankfully, sneakers have become much more acceptable with everyday outfits!

I also love a great pair of comfortable jeans or jean shorts. I recently heard someone say jean shorts aren’t really “in” anymore…but then again, maybe they’re making a comeback. Honestly, I never stopped wearing them. They’re comfortable, casual, and they go with just about everything, so they’re staying in my closet no matter what the trends say.

When I need to dress things up a bit, comfort is still at the top of my list. I tend to gravitate toward elevated tops, especially in solid black. They always make me feel polished without trying too hard. I also like to pick up one fun, trendy top each season so I have something fresh when the occasion calls for it.

And let’s talk about leggings.

Yes, I wear them. It actually took me a long time to feel comfortable wearing leggings without a longer top covering my backside. These days, I’m perfectly happy wearing them for a trip to the grocery store, running errands, or teaching school swimming at my part-time job. I still wouldn’t wear them that way to the office, but for casual days, they’re one of my favorite go-to pieces.

I’ve also become a big believer in investing in a few high-quality classics. One of my favorites is a lightweight white Tommy Bahama cardigan that I’ve worn with countless outfits. It’s perfect for summer when I need just a little extra layer. I also have a lightweight black Athleta zip-up jacket that I’ve owned for at least five years, and it still looks brand new. Those are the kinds of pieces worth spending a little more on because they’ll stay in style and hold up year after year.

At this stage of life, I’ve learned that the best wardrobe staples are the ones that make getting dressed easy, comfortable, and still a little fun. Whether it’s supportive sneakers, jean shorts, leggings, an elevated black top, or a classic layering piece, I choose clothes that work for my body and my real life; not just what’s trending.

I’ll link a few of my favorite pieces (or similar options) below in case you’re looking to refresh your own wardrobe with comfortable, versatile staples that you’ll actually wear.
